Growing up, my dad make “hooked up spaghetti”, almost every week, as an adult, I call it Spaghetti Bolognese. It’s a classic weeknight dinner that has a ton of flavor, is low in dairy, and high in protein.
My favorite thing about making bolognese is that its affordable and yields a ton of food!

Tips for making the perfect Meat Sauce
- Mis en place– This recipe is easy and straightforward but the prep requires a bit of work. Cut up your veggies, gather your spices, and put your cheese aside. This will make for easy cleanup and a delicious sauce!
- Cook your sauce low and slow– The longer you let your Bolognese simmer, the more you allow your flavor to build. Give it a good mix and let it go low, and slow!
- Get fun and creative- Use any kind of sausage, ground meat and experiment with spices! Cooking is meant to be fun so feel free to play around with the sauce recipe!
Substitutions and Recipe Variations
Make it Vegan- Swap out the meat for a plant-based alternative like beyond beef or Impossible meat. Use dairy-free Parmesan cheese, oat milk, and dairy-free butter!
Make it Keto- This Meat Sauce is keto Friendly; all you’ll need is a plant-based pasta! Or, you can serve this delicious meat sauce over zucchini noodles. *Substitute the sugar in this recipe for Splenda*

Spaghetti Bolognese
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef You can also use ground turkey or ground pork
- 1 lb italian sausage I like to use sweet & spicy
- 1 cup carrots diced
- 1 cup celery diced
- 1 large yellow or white onion diced
- 2 tbsps tomato paste
- 2 tbsps butter
- 28 ounced crushed tomatoes
- 8 ounces tomato sauce
- 8 oz milk I use oat for this recipe but you can use whole milk
- 4 oz parmesan cheese
- 4 oz red wine cabarnet merlot
- 1 lb pasta Thick cut high quality spaghetti noodles are the best, but you can use tagatelle, fusilli, angel hair!
Spices
- 1/8 cup sugar
- 2 tsp garlic powder
- 2 tsps red pepper flakes
- 2 tsps dried herbs italian seasoning or herbs de provence
- 2 tsps onion powder
- 2 tsps salt
- 1 tsp black pepper
Instructions
- In a large hot pot, brown your ground meat and sausage. Remove, and set aside.
- In the same pot, sautée onion, garlic, celery, and carrots for 3-4 minutes or until semi-soft. Then, add in tomato paste, and butter. Mix.
- Pour in crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, oat milk, wine, fresh herbs and spices and parmesan cheese. Stir for 2-3 minutes on medium heat.
- Pour cooked meat back in and simmer on low heat for 35-45 minutes. Serve over your favorite al al dente pasta.

I used spicy sausage, whole milk, and sweet red wine but followed everything else to a T and it turned out absolutely delicious. Perfection. My kids thought it was too spicy but thatโs okay, more for me๐๐โค๏ธ
I wanted a different flavor from my normal spaghetti, and this went CRAZY! Flavor is insane and itโs an ea ast meal! My picky 4 year old noticed the difference and said, โI like this one Mommy!โ WIIIIINNNEERRRR
quick question, so because there is wine added will it be ok for children to eat? sorry if its a dumb question to ask.
