Must Make Southern Fried Cabbage
You don’t have to be from the south to enjoy this cabbage recipe. It’s a great one to have around when wanting something simple yet so flavorful.
- Big Southern flavor: Smoky, savory, and peppery goodness in every bite. It’s the ultimate chef’s kiss!
- One skillet convenience: I love that I only need one pan to make this so it’s so easy to clean up.
- Enough for everyone: Cabbage is inexpensive, hearty and stretches so well to feed a crowd. I make this as a holiday side dish, for family gatherings and whenever I have friends over.
- Versatile side dish: Perfect with fried chicken, pork chops, BBQ or even served over rice. I love making this Southern fried cabbage along with my Honey Butter Cornbread.
Ingredients You Need
You can find all of the ingredients for this easy recipe at your local grocery store. It’s also a great way to use up leftover produce in your refrigerator.

Note: The full list of ingredients with measurements is provided in the recipe card below.
- Green cabbage: Don’t forget to remove the outer leaves on the head of cabbage and rinse before slicing.
- Bell peppers: I like to use a variety of color in cooking, so I used red, green and yellow peppers sliced thin to give this fried cabbage some pop in color.
- Bacon: Use either turkey bacon or regular pork bacon to give that rich, salty and smoky flavor to the dish.
- Sausage: Chicken or turkey sausage for hearty and savory flavor. You can substitute with andouille sausage for a little extra kick.
- Onion: Diced for a little taste of sweetness and building on that classic Southern flavor.
- Chicken broth: I recommend using a low sodium one since I like to adjust taste with the spices, and we are cooking with bacon.
- Spices: Adobo, salt, pepper, garlic powder and paprika are perfect for this fried cabbage. You could even add a pinch of red pepper flakes for a little kick.
How to Make Southern Fried Cabbage
This fried cabbage recipe is ridiculously easy and comes together in less than 30 minutes. Let me show you how to make it!

- Cook the bacon and sausage: In a large skillet over medium heat, sear the bacon and sausage until cooked through. Remove the crispy bacon and cooked sausage from the pan and set aside on a plate. You can leave the bacon grease in the pan.
- Cook the peppers and onions: Add the olive oil to the same pan, then add the peppers and onions. Cook for 1 to 2 minutes, stirring frequently.

- Cook the cabbage: Stir in the green cabbage, chicken broth, and seasonings. Cook for 10 to 15 minutes on low heat, or until the cabbage is soft and tender.
- Stir everything together: Stir in the cooked bacon and sausage and cook until heated through.
Expert Tips
- Use a large skillet. I prefer to use my cast iron skillet for this recipe so the cabbage cooks evenly and doesn’t steam.
- Choose the right cabbage. Pick a firm green cabbage since dense cabbage heads hold up better when sautéing.
- Use any type of bacon or sausage. Feel free to use turkey or pork bacon and chicken, turkey or pork sausage. As long as it’s smoky, it will taste just fine.
- Take your time cooking the onions and peppers. Let the onions caramelize and the peppers soften before adding in the cabbage. This will balance out the sweetness with the peppery and smoky spices.
- Cook the cabbage low and slow. After the initial sauté, reduce the heat and let it cook for 10-15 minutes so the cabbage becomes tender without losing structure.
